As a project manager that often works on multi-lingual job sites, I bought “Spanish Short Stories for Beginners” as a refresher to help me better navigate through my workday. I took 5 years of Spanish in junior/senior high school (20 years ago), and that foundation has helped me a great deal, over time. However, as I get farther away from my high school years, I'm finding it more difficult to "connect the dots" when trying to work with my teams on a job site. And while Google Translate is great, my preference is to attempt to communicate with people on a more "human" level.Shipment: My order arrived right on the date advertised. The book was packaged simply, and in an appropriate envelope for its size/weight. The book was in great condition when I opened the envelope.Cover: I think it should be noted that the color scheme and wording on the front of the book sells it as: “This is a book for beginners. You should definitely try this book if you are a novice Spanish speaker.” It has a children’s book vibe, with an all-ages-will-benefit way about it. It caught my eye while I was searching for something to help me, so it’s important to recognize that as a driving force for my purchase.Substance: I love the format. There are clear instructions (on pages 3 and 4) that direct you on how the book should be used. The directions encourage you to read through each story, even when you don’t fully comprehend the words. And that’s okay. That’s part of the system, because this book is about understanding via context, not “death by grammar” as it mentions in the introduction.You read through the (Spanish) story, and try to comprehend as much as you can without any “help.” After the story, there is a summary (also in Spanish) where you see if the rundown matches the general idea of the plot. Next you read the English summary, so you clearly understand what is going on. At that point, you will reference the vocabulary list (which provides short and concise definitions) and note areas of the story where you lack understanding. Finally, there is a small test at the end of the chapter, allowing you to check what you have learned.What I really like about this book is how similar this type of Spanish assistance is to language immersion… but it’s bite-sized. We all know the best way to learn a language is through being around people (constantly) who speak that language. The principle of immersion is listening to or reading the language, and then connecting it to your first language. But when you don’t have an immersive environment, a book like “Spanish Short Stories for Beginners” attempts to deliver the basic format of how your brain perceives immersion in a language.Overall, I find this book very helpful in strengthening my vocabulary. I like how much can be learned from just a handful of pages, so the reading is not time consuming, and I can fit a chapter easily into my day. An easy and fun read that takes the “textbook” out of the learning process, I highly recommend this book for beginners and anyone considering returning to Spanish. My daughter (9) has taken two years of Spanish (and me along with her), but I have always felt she could have a more expansive vocabulary. So far, I feel this book is an excellent resource and just what she needs.There are some minor formatting issues, but nothing that I would find that detracts from the value of the stories. Overall, I found it engaging and educational, and well worth the list price.
